# Bay fishing in Port Aransas

The bays are the calm side of Port Aransas: shallow, protected, grass-bottomed water behind the island where the redfish and trout live, fishable on days when the Gulf of Mexico is a mess. Bay trips are guide territory — small boats, skinny water, light tackle.

## What is bay fishing like in Port Aransas?

Sight-casting and drifting over seagrass flats in a few feet of water, working shorelines and spoil islands for redfish and speckled trout, minutes from the harbor. It is the half-day trip that fits kids, first-timers, and anyone who wants steady action over a long boat ride.

## What do you catch on a bay trip?

## What rules matter in the shallow bays?

One above all: most of this water sits in the Redfish Bay State Scientific Area, where uprooting seagrass with a submerged propeller is a criminal offense. ### The seagrass rule, stated accurately

Much of the shallow water behind Port Aransas sits in the Redfish Bay State Scientific Area, and Texas law is specific: “A person may not uproot or dig out any rooted seagrass plant from a bay bottom or other saltwater bottom area… by means of a propeller.” ([Tex. Parks & Wild. Code §66.024](https://codes.findlaw.com/tx/parks-and-wildlife-code/parks-wild-sect-66-024.html)). Uprooting seagrass with a submerged prop is a Class C Parks and Wildlife Code misdemeanor, with a fine of up to $500, per [TPWD’s Redfish Bay brochure](https://tpwd.texas.gov/publications/pwdpubs/media/pwd_br_v3400_1101a.pdf).

The rule closes no water and bans no fishing. Over shallow grass, do what [TPWD’s own guidance](https://tpwd.texas.gov/landwater/water/habitats/seagrass/redfish-bay) says: “Lift, Drift, Pole and Troll.” Anchoring, electric trolling motors, and running at normal planing speed are expressly fine — and wading and drifting are unaffected. TPWD marks the area’s boundaries with in-water signage (tampering with those signs is a separate offense) and publishes a downloadable boundary map on the page linked above.
