# Redfish Bay

The roughly 50 square miles of shallow grass between Aransas and Corpus Christi Bays is the engine of inshore fishing here — and nearly all of it sits inside the Redfish Bay State Scientific Area, which means one Texas law shapes how every boat runs it.

## What makes Redfish Bay special?

Seagrass. The bay holds all five Texas seagrass species across roughly 14,000 acres, and that habitat is the nursery and feeding ground for the redfish, speckled trout, and flounder that define this fishery. ### The seagrass rule, stated accurately

Much of the shallow water behind Port Aransas sits in the Redfish Bay State Scientific Area, and Texas law is specific: “A person may not uproot or dig out any rooted seagrass plant from a bay bottom or other saltwater bottom area… by means of a propeller.” ([Tex. Parks & Wild. Code §66.024](https://codes.findlaw.com/tx/parks-and-wildlife-code/parks-wild-sect-66-024.html)). Uprooting seagrass with a submerged prop is a Class C Parks and Wildlife Code misdemeanor, with a fine of up to $500, per [TPWD’s Redfish Bay brochure](https://tpwd.texas.gov/publications/pwdpubs/media/pwd_br_v3400_1101a.pdf).

The rule closes no water and bans no fishing. Over shallow grass, do what [TPWD’s own guidance](https://tpwd.texas.gov/landwater/water/habitats/seagrass/redfish-bay) says: “Lift, Drift, Pole and Troll.” Anchoring, electric trolling motors, and running at normal planing speed are expressly fine — and wading and drifting are unaffected. TPWD marks the area’s boundaries with in-water signage (tampering with those signs is a separate offense) and publishes a downloadable boundary map on the page linked above.

## How do you fish Redfish Bay without a boat?

Paddle or wade it. The Lighthouse Lakes paddling trail off the Highway 361 causeway near Aransas Pass runs entirely inside the Scientific Area, with a city-maintained launch on the causeway's north side, and wading the accessible shorelines is unaffected by the seagrass rule. TPWD recommends kayaks over canoes for the trail — the southeasterly wind is strong and steady — and warns paddlers to use caution crossing the Aransas “Shrimp Boat” Channel, where commercial traffic has right of way. ## What do you catch on the Redfish Bay flats?

The namesake first: redfish, tailing on the grass in skinny water, with speckled trout over the deeper grass and sand pockets, flounder along the drop-offs and channel edges in fall, and black drum and sheepshead around structure through the cool months.
