What is bay fishing like in Port Aransas?

What do you catch on a bay trip?

Redfish and speckled trout all year, flounder staging around the passes in fall, and black drum and sheepshead on structure through the cooler months. The bays are also the wind refuge: when the offshore forecast dies, the bay bite usually doesn't.

What rules matter in the shallow bays?

One above all: most of this water sits in the Redfish Bay State Scientific Area, where uprooting seagrass with a submerged propeller is a criminal offense. Fish it the way TPWD asks — lift the motor, drift, pole, or troll across the shallow grass. TPWD — Redfish Bay

The seagrass rule, stated accurately

Much of the shallow water behind Port Aransas sits in the Redfish Bay State Scientific Area, and Texas law is specific: “A person may not uproot or dig out any rooted seagrass plant from a bay bottom or other saltwater bottom area… by means of a propeller.” (Tex. Parks & Wild. Code §66.024). Uprooting seagrass with a submerged prop is a Class C Parks and Wildlife Code misdemeanor, with a fine of up to $500, per TPWD’s Redfish Bay brochure.

The rule closes no water and bans no fishing. Over shallow grass, do what TPWD’s own guidance says: “Lift, Drift, Pole and Troll.” Anchoring, electric trolling motors, and running at normal planing speed are expressly fine — and wading and drifting are unaffected. TPWD marks the area’s boundaries with in-water signage (tampering with those signs is a separate offense) and publishes a downloadable boundary map on the page linked above.
