Is flounder gigging legal in Texas?
Yes, by a two-rule chain rather than a single sentence. Rule one: only non-game fish may be taken with a gig in Texas salt water. Rule two: flounder is not on the Texas saltwater game fish list. Two honesty notes most gigging pages skip. TPWD’s own older FAQ still carries a superseded November-only rule — the current closure is November 1 through December 14, per the pocket guide. And on night gigging: No prohibition on night gigging was found in state rules, but absence of a found rule is not proof of none — local and park rules may apply, so we do not state that night gigging is legal. When is the gigging best?
The shoulder weeks around the closure: October, as the migration stacks fish on the sand flats on their way to the passes, and again from mid-December when the season reopens on the fish that wintered. Clear, calm, dark nights are the real requirement — wind ends a gigging trip faster than any date.

How do you go gigging without your own boat?
With a guide — gigging is the most equipment-dependent trip in the bays: a shallow skiff, lights, and intimate knowledge of which flats hold fish on which tide. The seagrass rule applies to every shallow run getting there, same as any flats trip.

Do you need a special license to gig flounder in Texas?
No separate gigging license exists — the standard Texas fishing license with the saltwater endorsement covers it. The limits are the same as rod and reel too: the flounder bag and the fall closure apply to a gig exactly as they apply to a hook.
Is flounder gigging hard?
The skill is reading water, not wielding the gig: clear, calm, shallow water over sand and grass on a dark night is the whole game, which makes it as weather-dependent as fly fishing. Local guides run dedicated gigging trips with boats, lights, and the water knowledge built in.
